This post was created so that we could share ideas about a potential BOCES teacher workshop on creating virtual fieldwork. We had a good discussion about the possibilities today, and here’s what we’re considering:
- Jud and Sarah have each created good but very different virtual fieldwork experiences. Part of the workshop would be contrasting these in both their technological and pedagogical approaches. Jud’s is an interactive Quicktime movie and it was created with his colleagues (Allers & Cleveland). You can play the movie below. It is still in draft form (though it’s clearly a well-developed draft). Sarah’s is a web site that simulates a hike and allows you to take a closer look at things along the way through the use of photos embedded in other photos.
- We’d do the workshop at Colgate and it would be jointly sponsored by Colgate and three BOCES (DCMO, Madison-Oneida, & Oneida-Herkimer-Madison).
- Joe, Melisa & Laurie will likely also participate.
- In this (blog) space, we’ll share ideas about what teachers might do before arriving at the workshop (namely, taking a bunch of pictures and maybe collecting some samples).
- What should you do in taking pictures? (As I noted, I always get home and wish I’d taken more close ups. I also forget to include items to show scale…)
Here’s the ReaL website: http://people.colgate.edu/ddugganhaas/real/real.html. To go to the (newly created) page of virtual fieldwork, click here: http://people.colgate.edu/ddugganhaas/real/VirtualFieldExperiences.html. Jud’s and Sarah’s are directly linked above. Thoughts?
Below is Jud’s Chapman Creek Virtual Fieldtrip. Note that it is an interactive Quicktime movie created using Apple’s Keynote software. You need to click on the movie to move onto the next image.
Thanks,
Don
